A Short History of Witchcraft

Early Witches were people who practiced witchcraft, using magick spells and calling upon spirits for help or to bring about change. It's unclear exactly when Witches came onto the historical scene, but one of the earliest records of a Witch is in the Bible; in the book of 1 Samuel, thought be written between 931 B.C. and 721 B.C.

Goddess Hecate

She is commonly known as the first Witch – the Mother of all Witches. Goddess Hecate is known by many other names also; The Triple Goddess, Goddess of Necromancy, The Guardian of All Doorways and Cemeteries and the Dark Goddess. Today, many contemporary Pagans and Wiccans honour Hecate, as well as the older Gods and Goddesses.

Witch Trials

The first witch trails occurred in 1692, where Bridget Bishop was hanged after being found guilty of witchcraft. In these times, being smart, dressing differently or owning land were considered potential witchery. Bridget inherited an apple orchard from one of her late husbands. While on trial, Bridget was accused of practicing witchcraft on her husband – resulting in his death. Many further accusations levied by the townsfolk deemed that she was indeed a Witch, so she was soon found guilty and sentenced by the judged to be hanged. Nineteen people were eventually executed as witches before, in February 1693, Governor Sir William Phips issued a declaration effectively ending the Salem Witch Trials.

Witches Are Known by Many Names

The list is too great to include them all but, remember, when practicing witchcraft for beginners or experts, you don't have to stick to a single path. Take, for example, an eclectic Witch: they pull from many different witchcraft traditions for their spell-work, relying on many different cultures and traditions for their rituals. For them, there is no set rule – they cast what they feel is right.

These Witches cast alone, without a coven. They can incorporate various different paths, based on their interests, rather than following witchcraft as part of a wider spiritual journey.

Religions and Beliefs

There are countless religions and beliefs – Witchcraft, Wicca, Paganism, etc. No-one can tell you what path to follow. It's about what feels and comes naturally to you. All Wiccans are Witches, but not all Witches are Wiccans. All Wiccans are Pagans, but not all Pagans are Wiccans. Some Witches are Pagans, but some are not. Some Pagans practice witchcraft, while others choose not to.

Paganism

Pagans view the world as a place of joy and life, not of sin and suffering. Their belief is that the divine is here with them in the natural world, not in some faraway place in the sky. Pagans hold a deep reverence for nature and the earth. They also tend to be earth conscious. Pagans believe that nature is sacred and that the natural cycles of birth, growth and death observed in the world around them carry profound spiritual meaning. Human beings are seen as part of nature, along with other animals, trees, stones, plants and everything else that is of this earth.

Growth

The practice of witchcraft has seen major growth in recent decades. Witchcraft is an embodiment of truth – believing in the unknown and seeing the world as a magical place through every little act in our day to day lives. Witchcraft is about visualising, through manifestation, how we would like our lives to be. There are thousands of tools available, many of which can be found in our shop, to help you explore witchcraft, for beginners and experts alike. The real tool, however, is willpower and the ability to focus on what you truly need.

  Which Path Will You Choose?

The choice of which pathway to follow is entirely yours. It's your journey and your spiritual quest. My advice would be to research each pathway, one at a time. There is so much information to absorb – don't become overwhelmed! Just take your time. If you think you're one but, later on, realise you fit into a different category, that's absolutely fine. When it comes to witchcraft, for beginners or experts, we're all free to change our minds!

Step One: Believe in Yourself

It's always the first step! The mind is a very powerful tool, which helps us to materialise our desires. If this is the path that you want to follow, you need to truly believe that you are a Witch. Address yourself as such!

Step Two: Find Your Path

If plants and herbs are your area of interest, explore Green witchcraft. Do you feel balanced between light and dark magic? Grey witches are worth looking into. If you have questions or need advice, I'm always available to chat.

Step Three: Connect to Others

I don't pretend to have all the answers or knowledge but, if there's a question you're not sure about, get in contact and I'll try my best to help. Remember: we are all in this together, on this beautiful journey we have to take in our lives.

Blessings to you all!
